As a science educator and a devout follower of Wiccan (earth based beliefs) Kathy Duhoux (Du-ho) lives in two cultural worlds. As a very young child she had a profound and unshaken love for rocks. For Christmas at age ten she got a geology kit which seemed to reinforce her desire to understand all that could be learned from rocks, gems and minerals. She went on to earn a BS in geology from The Ohio State University, did graduate work in geology at the University of Texas in Austin and went on to complete her MS in geology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Kathy worked in the oil and gas industry before becoming a science teacher, teaching chemistry, physics and life science including human biology, genetics, ecology and more to middle school students. Kathy then developed the curriculum for, and then taught, a physical geology course at the university level.
Over two decades ago her passionate investigation and research into the earth’s natural elements introduced her to Wiccan earth-based teachings emphasizing ritual observances of the natural order of seasonal and life cycles of nature where science and nature (or the organic spirit of nature). This scientific and spiritual knowledge became “one” for her although viewed separately by contemporary mainstream categorizations. In this highly unique arena she created an independent identity or persona “Vella Rose” for practical reasons. Vella began studying alternative spirituality in the mid 1990’s after teaching science and math and social studies and realizing that there were nature based religions in Asia, Africa, Australia, and our Native American cultures.
She has studied Reiki (third degree), animal communication, sound healing, how to use Tibetan singing bowls and Celtic herbalism. In recent years Vella has been taking various classes and courses to become a naturalist and is in the process of authoring a book on the spiritual and ritualistic use of stones and crystals.
