(Draft article not yet edited for accuracy) In the desolate high plains laying between the Sangre de Cristo and Saguache Mountain Ranges lies one of the most unique places on the planet. Its desolation and beautiful surrounding mountains provide one of the most dramatic settings possible for ongoing supernatural experiences. Since the late 1700s there has been documentation of bizarre unexplainable lights in the night sky. Nearly every type of paranormal activity you can think of has been historically reported here. The area is known as the San Luis Valley or “The Mysterious Valley” as identified by a book of the same name written by paranormal investigator, researcher and author Christopher O’Brien in the mid 1990s.
The 13 Native American Indian tribes known to have inhabited the Valley considered it sacred for a number of reasons. There were many sacred sites in the Valley known to the Tribe’s Medicine Men. It is where the tribes came to trade with each other and was referred to as the Peaceful Valley since the tribes did not tolerate conflict there. The four sacred mountain peaks of the Hopi encompass the north end of the San Luis Valley. San Luis Lake is known as “Sip-a-pu” place of emergence where the Hopi say they emerged from the underworld to the earth’s surface. At least three unrelated reports from credible individuals identify dramatic low altitude close-up sightings over the lake. Zapata Falls is another location well known to be a location for sacred ceremonies by the spiritual elders of numerous tribes occupying the valley. Many individuals have reported bizarre supernatural encounters in this high walled stone grotto leading back to this 70 foot waterfall.
To our understanding the world’s only UFO Watchtower sits in absolutely nowhere along Highway 17 in the northern central part of the Valley. In the late 1980s the UFO activity and encounters were so frequent it was dubbed Abduction Alley.

SAN LUIS VALLEY (as posted on the National UFO Center website)– On September 18, 2008, at the Sanchez Canal and Highway 159, Costilla County around 1 PM, the witness was looking north towards old San Acacio when a whitish silver metallic craft appeared. It was 5 to 7 degrees above the town of San Acacio and three to four thumbs in length. When the witness looked down and it disappeared. Later around 2:45 PM, she took a picture of the Statute of the Virgin Mary and this object was in the photo south of Highway 142. This Report Was Received From Colorado UFO Investigator Thomas Peay:
Comments: The identity of the object in the above photo is unknown. I don’t believe that it is a balloon and a blimp would unlikely be flying in a remote area of the San Luis Valley. Anyone else who witnessed this object or knows of its identity is urged to file a report. Thanks to William Puckett UFOS Northwest http://ufosnw.com
